I have been fascinated with pregnancy and childbirth for as long as I can remember. I'm the oldest of five children and saw my mother pregnant and breastfeeding from a very young age. When I became pregnant with my first child I literally fell in love with the process. I read everything I could get my hands on and my fascination with pregnancy and birth didn't stop when my daughter was born. I felt a strong calling toward supporting pregnant women, and a few years later pursued certification as a birth doula through DONA International. After supporting birthing couples in Hampton Roads I decided to extend my support into the postpartum period by becoming certified as a postpartum doula through DONA International as well.

I love what I do and am inspired by the families I serve. Every birth is a miracle to me and every mother is so beautiful and strong. It is a privilege for me to be invited to take part in such a pivotal moment in the lives of families. And I don't take my commitment to my clients lightly.

My services include one or two prenatal visits where we discuss your birth wishes, practice comfort measures if you wish, and get acquainted. I have numerous books, videos, a birth ball and other items available for my clients to borrow as well. I am available by phone or e-mail during your pregnancy but will be on call 24/7 for you from 37 weeks until your baby is born. I will come be with you when requested and will stay with you for the duration of your labor, remaining with you one to two hours after the birth to help you get settled and initiate breastfeeding. I will be in touch by phone a day or two later and will meet with you once again at a postpartum visit. It is then that I present the birth story, which is a typed recounting of your birth experience that can help you process the birth and relish every detail. But more importantly, the postpartum visit is also an opportunity to admire that beautiful new baby!

I would love to chat with you and even set up a face-to-face meeting, if you like. Take a look at my web-site to see if you think we'd be a good fit: www.amaradoula.com. And feel free to call or e-mail anytime. (amaradoula@gmail.com, 467-3294 home or 375-0939 cell). I wish you all the best in your pregnancy and upcoming delivery.
